Rising Rents Could Help Home Sales Numbers

With more people opting to rent instead of buy in today’s uncertain housing market, experts are predicting – and hoping – that housing numbers could get a boost as rents rise. Although homeownership is presently at levels so low that they match those of 1998, the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) is optimistic about the spring of this year, saying that “we might see a spring season better than the numbers are predicting” thanks to the rising cost of renting pushing more people into homeownership.

According to a study by Kingsley Associates, less than two-thirds of present renters (60 percent) intend to renew their leases this year. MBA researchers are now predicting that home sales might grow as much as 10 percent in 2013 and are hoping for $1 trillion in mortgage originations, counting refinances, in 2012.

Do you think that the rental market could help out housing?
