McMansions Make a Comeback

McMansions caught a lot of flack over the past few years as media outlets touted the “new normal” and warned that American appetites for large and luxurious housing would probably never return. Good thing for developers that the media was wrong. According to data released yesterday by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), it looks like the McMansion is making a comeback – and just in time to contribute in a significant way to a rise in new-home sales. According to the NAHB, sales of newly-built homes rose 3.3 percent month-over-month in April 2012, and 9.9 percent year-over-year. According to builders, this is, in large part, because buyers want bigger homes and are willing to pay for the square footage[1]. Other client requests for new-home customization – in addition to more square footage – include crown molding,built-in microwaves, and double ovens.

Would you buy a McMansion?
