Personal Finance: Customers Prey to PIN-Pad Tampering

If your recently made a Barnes & Noble purchase in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, or Rhode Island, you probably ought to change your personal identification number (PIN) right away. The bookseller disclosed late Tuesday evening this week that the devices used by customers to swipe debit and credit cards in 63 stores had been tampered with in a “sophisticated criminal effort to steal information”. The criminals interfered with only one device in each store, meaning that less than one percent of all devices in the targeted stores were affected. All PIN pads were disabled in Barnes & Noble stores nationwide as soon as the company became aware of the problem.

The criminals planted bugs in the PIN pads in order to capture credit card and PIN numbers. The problem was discovered last month and Barnes & Noble believes all affected PIN pads were shut off by September 14, 2012. The bookseller did not disclose how long the problem had gone undetected. Barnes & Noble recommended that customers “who have swiped their cards at any of the affected stores” should change PIN numbers and monitor credit card and bank statements for unauthorized activity. However, the company emphasized that its customer database is secure and that online purchases and college campus purchases were not affected.

Does this make you nervous about buying books at this store? Will it change the way you make purchases? Our information is out there, thats inevitable. But you can be protected through a one of a kind monitoring system that offers “Restoration” when your Idntentity is compromised. for further details and information go to

  1. First off I would like to say wonderful blog! I had a quick
question in which I’d like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your head before writing.
I have had a tough time clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out there.
I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems
like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations
    or tips? Thank you!

    • Thank you. I have always enjoyed what I do and I am very passionate in serving others. To stay focused and clear minded I think about my goal and the outcome I am trying to achieve. I also continue to educate myself and learn from others. Remember, knowledge is power but only if you use it.
